The beveled shoulder mortise and tenon joint is a stronger variant of the normal blind mortise and tenon. The full width of the beam is housed into the post, so it has more support for heavy vertical loads, which makes it ideal for timber framing. I prefer to cut this joint by hand.
The plans have dimensions for making it out of 3″x3″ stock or 1-1/2″x1-1/2″ stock, so it can be made out of 2×2 or a 4×4 dimensional lumber.
