Do Planter Boxes Need to be Lined?

Planter boxes are wonderful additions to any garden or outdoor space, offering a versatile way to display your favorite plants and flowers. One common debate among gardening enthusiasts is whether or not planter boxes need to be lined. In this article, we will delve into the advantages of skipping the lining process, enabling you to embrace the freedom and creativity that unlined planter boxes offer.

Embracing Natural Drainage

By forgoing the lining of planter boxes, you can promote natural drainage. Allowing water to flow freely through the soil prevents excess moisture buildup, minimizing the risk of root rot and ensuring optimal conditions for plant growth. I’ve built many planters over the years, and the ones that had a liner did not drain properly, which I could tell by measuring the soil with my moisture meter.

Cost-Effectiveness and Simplicity

Lining a planter box adds extra costs and complexity to your project. By omitting the lining, you can save money on materials. Not lining the planter box also simplifies the construction process, and removes the requirement for a stapler to attach the lining.

Considering Wood Rot

Many people think that you need to line a planter box to preserve the wood. I think a better option is to use a rot-resistant wood species. Planter boxes will always be exposed to moisture, whether from regular watering or from rain or condensation. If you use a wood species that doesn’t rot, like redwood or cedar you shouldn’t have any problems.

I use a lot of redwood fence boards and dimensioned lumber (2x4’s, 4x4’s, etc.) for my planter boxes, because it is readily available where I live, but in many parts of the USA cedar is more affordable. My oldest planters have been in continuous use for 7 years and have no issues with rot.

Environmental Considerations

Sustainability and environmental concerns play important roles in modern gardening practices. By avoiding the use of synthetic liners, you reduce waste and minimize your ecological footprint. I personally like to grow my vegetables organically, and I have concerns about liners leeching chemicals into the soil and eventually into my food.

Conclusion

When it comes to planter boxes, the choice of lining or not lining ultimately depends on your preferences and gardening goals. My personal preference based on experience is to not use a liner.
